Eggplants and rainwater

Am feeling terribly sad over the loss of life in Japan – and it’s not over yet for the Japanese, and for all the people around the Pacific at risk of a tsunami. dreadful.

Still, we are one foot in front of the other here. I made eggplant pickle with our eggplants, using the recipe at the lovely (and local) Fig Jam and Lime Cordial blog. I bottled half properly (ie in a waterbath), but just put the other half in a sterile jar and popped it in the fridge for eating in the next couple of weeks.

We got our first water bill here – our usage is an average 488 litres a day, which is really too much for two adults and a puppy. We have a sizable rainwater tank, specifically for watering the frontyard veggies. Alas, we haven’t enough rain to fill it yet. We plan to install two smaller tanks in the back – one for the runoff from the back verandah, the other for the garage. We will put them both on platforms, so gravity can do the work, & we won’t need pumps.

I’m catching shower water in a bucket for the fruit trees – the next challenge will be working out how to capture grey water from the laundry. We don’t want to overload the washing machine motor, and the machine is just a bit far from the window to run a direct pipe outside. We’ll just have to keep nutting it out!

Thank you for the shout-out, I’m glad you enjoyed the eggplant recipe! It’s very moreish – I often have it with plain boiled rice for lunch!

Terrible news about Japan – I hope the worst is over soon – it’s been heartbreaking to watch it unfold…

You’re welcome Celia – I tasted some while I was bottling, and it was yummo. I’m sure it will be even tastier after a couple of weeks.

The news about the nuclear reactor in Japan is really terrible. Awful, awful situation.
