We decided to plant 3 trees this week: the multi graft citrus, the multi graft stone fruit tree, and the 2 year old eureka lemon. In the tradition of all best laid plans, we came unstuck. We had already checked the building plans, so we knew we weren’t near any buried pipelines, but there seemed to be an awful lot more than clay in the spot we were digging.

At every swing of the mattock, Mr B unearthed bricks, broken plates, pieces of marble paving stones, and what we thought might be car parts, but turned out to be sections of an old bedstead.

We suspect it was a layer of builders rubble, no doubt laid down as
fill when the property was first developed in 1926.

We got one tree in, but the amount of excavation involved meant that the other two are waiting for another day!

Planting a peach tree myself! I lost one last year in the heat and of course, it was the first year that it had abundant produce. Good luck and Happy New Year.
