My visit to the Chippendale Food Fair

Really, it was just a stroll through, but I had a lovely nose around. The local food co-op had some funding from the City of Sydney, and had quite a lot of involvement from ABC radio (whose studios are just down the hill) as well. Chippendale is an inner-city suburb with mixed housing & industrial spaces, & a working-class/indigenous history. It has been seriously gentrified over the years, but still has some rough edges. One of the city’s higher profile eco-houses is in Chippo, too.

I spent quite a bit of time in the Ultimo/Chippendale region in my early teens, and I found all the back lanes & warehouses very evocative. Sydney as a city has a nasty habit of knocking things down & building over them – it’s hard to find really old parts of the city that haven’t been polished up as tourist attractions. Consequently, one of the most interesting parts of the event (for me) was looking through the terraces in Kensington St, running along the side of the old Carlton United brewery. The brewery itself is being redeveloped, but the council has opened up the old houses to community groups & artists. There were a number of studios open, plus a nice rehearsal space (managed by the Queen St studios). There was also a lovely art exhibit focused on farming communities in the Murray Darling region, produced by the Big hArt company. It was called Gold, & the website is well worth a look.
